The Public Speakers Reconnaissance Template

The Public Speakers Reconnaissance Template

Sun Tzu Principle: “The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.”

Over the past few weeks we’ve been having a conversation based around the principles found in Sun Tzu’s Art of War, a handbook written about 2,300 years ago, in what is now north China. This handbook had a significant impact on the strategic thinking of all East Asia.

One could say the principles of Sun Tzu were… radical… would be a safe word to use… they were radical in handing military conflict.

The starting point from Sun Tzu was to first, achieve without going to battle. Then, if you had to go to battle, use tactics like reconnaissance, analysis, organisation, deception, and spies in the execution of a winning strategy.

Over the last 12 podcasts I’ve been connecting many of these military principles to the world of the public speaker, the business presenter… here, now… today, in 2017.

As I’ve mentioned in several previous podcasts, Sun Tzu was an adamant believer in doing your homework first… kind of like that advise my dad always use to give me, ‘Measure Twice and Cut Once.’

I’ve been peaking to audiences since I was 14 years old. I’ve engaged and suffered agonising defeat more times than I want to remember. I’ve also engaged and won the battle hundreds of times.

The feeling between winning and losing is a feeling a public speaker never forgets!

I’m going to share my secret weapon for engaging and winning with you. I call it the 5 Question Recon Template.

I’m going to give you the five questions as my action thought of the day…
1. Why am I giving this speech?
2. What do I want to achieve?
3. Who will my audience be?
4. Why will they listen to me?
5. How much time do I have?

In the next podcast, we will start diving into each of the 5 recon questions.
