EPIC Thought of The Day – Three Hand Gesture Zones
Since 1991 I’ve run over 3000 workshops and have trained well over 10,000 people in the skill of presenting. In these workshops one of the most dominant questions has been, “What do I do with my hands?”
We talked, in the last EPIC Thought, about opportunities for your hands to support and paint pictures, to elaborate on the words. Well, how do you do that?
The first thing we need to talk about are the zones. Like movement, there are three zones: Conservative, Moderate and Dynamic.
The Conservative Zone is about the size of a volleyball. While your resting position for your hands is around your belt line, to gesture they always come move up around the neckline, keeping the gestures within the size of a volleyball.
The Moderate Zone is within the parameters of a beach ball, where gestures a wider, deeper… picture the size of a beach ball… say from your eyebrows down to your belt line and a foot outside the left and right of your body.
The third zone, the Dynamic Zone, is outside the moderate area. Most often when using a dynamic gesture, you will also be using movement… conservative, moderate or dynamic.
Here’s my EPIC Thought for today…
The next time you are preparing to present, consider the type of gestures you need to bring into it to best show, demonstrate and support the words of your message.
You master the three zones of gesturing and you’ll be well on your way to becoming an EPIC Presenter.
