EPIC Thought of The Day – The Power of Hand Gestures

Several years ago I had the great pleasure of being in an audience of about 350, where we were listening to several lecturers, some really smart people. One of them specialised in psychology with a special emphasis on communication.

She was talking about the power of the hands in communication and how they held so much importance, impact, and influence in effective communication.

Here’s what she did. She was talking about how the hands helped to paint pictures, how they were great visual aid tools, leading an audience in a specific direct or to take a course of action, to think a certain way.

To demonstrate her point, she invited us to stand, hold out our right hand, then reach up and touch the top of our head.

So… we all reached up and touched the tip of our nose! Why? Because that’s exactly what she did! She said touch the top of your head but she touched the tip of her nose… and so did we. We simply followed her lead.

Looking around I could see almost everyone had done the same thing. We all started laughing… at ourselves and each other because we realised what had happened. The lecturer then told us that we all performed like most any other audience would, we followed the leader.

We did what she did.

That’s the power of a hand gesture.

She went on to tell us about the ‘power of visual’ – where the hands create… because they are ‘visual’.  You can create things at the back of the room and move it forward simply by using their hands.

There’s an EPIC Thought here, your hands are designed to help you create support for your message. If you have something that expands, let your hands help you create that message. If you have something that is minimising then, let your hands help you create that picture.

If you have two, or three things that you need to demonstrate, then your hands can show two, or three things.

Let your hands help you lead the audience lead them to where you want them to be while all the all the time supporting your words.
