EPIC Thought of the Day – Pull Strategy
EPIC Thought 6 – Pull Strategy
Today I want to challenge you to Use the Pull Strategy in your next presentation…
What’s the difference between a pull and push strategy?
We ‘push’ our audience away from us when we do things like stand behind a lectern or a table and look down at our notes more than we engage the audience in eye contact… or we pay more attention to our slideshow screen than we do the members of our audience… or… we nervously shift from one foot to the other, …or gently rocking back on our heels, rubbing our hands together… playing with our ring finger… or… we speak from the top of the throat, not from within our diaphragm…
You get the picture.
When we do just one of these things… we start pushing our audience away from us.
Here’s how it happens… the audience begin to feel a little uncomfortable, unsure of our ability to hold their attention and bring our message with clarity, focus, passion and commitment. This uncomfortable feeling grows and they begin to ask the question… is this presenter safe?
Eventually we lose credibility, which is one of the critical elements in being an EPIC Communicator. When we start to lose credibility our competence starts coming into question… and its downhill from this point onwards. We have successfully pushed our audience away from us.
Here’s a bottom-line truth…. audiences want us to be warm and inviting.
They want us to pull them towards us. To invite them into our message. To stand with confidence and authority.
A Pull Strategy encourages the audience to connect with us… to trust us… to believe in us, and trust in us as a communicator.
